The Grassroots Learning Initiative on Teen Trafficking Exploitation and Rape aims to highlight the complex factors that make youth vulnerable to exploitation in an effort to promote effective strategies that prevent commercial sexual exploitation of youth.
In collaboration with youth empowerment organization, EpicGirl, The G.L.I.T.T.E.R. Project will highlight the voices of the young people who can best inform us on how to reduce vulnerability to exploitation. The campaign is led by a group of impacted, yet empowered youth who have committed themselves to speaking out about the systemic and cultural practices that leave them feeling neglected, silenced, marginalized, and vulnerable.
The Y.E.S. Council
The youth behind this campaign are members of JFAM Foundation’s Y.E.S. Council, and their experience and insight into the complex roots of exploitation make them invaluable to the campaign as our Youth Empowerment Specialists. Part of the campaign’s focus is raising funds to compensate them for their involvement with the initiative as paid consultants. Additionally, members of the Y.E.S. Council will also have the opportunity to join the JFAM Foundation as paid staff members upon completion of the EpicGirl program.
EPIC GIRL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that exists to empower girls to reach their full potential through educational programs, mentoring, counseling, and community activities. Epic Girl stands for empowerment through education, power through purpose, individual identity discovery, and connection through community.
The G.L.I.T.T.E.R. Project hopes to develop a community of widespread support for young people to aid in empowerment and prevention by combatting shame, stigma, and misunderstanding of the facts surrounding youth affected by domestic minor sex trafficking. The campaign further aims to increase understanding of domestic minor sex trafficking among youth in effort to increase self-identification of victims, inform youth of available resources, and combat the shame, stigma, and altered worldview often experienced by most victims.
Our main focus will be on the development of a curriculum for youth, by youth, that will have a heavy emphasis on youth empowerment and provide them with a more in depth understanding of what exploitation is and the many ways that they may encounter it.
Our secondary focus is advocating for specific recognition of exploited youth by designating January 29th as Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Awareness Day. Currently, the U.S. recognizes January as Human Trafficking Month and January 11th as Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Human trafficking is an umbrella term that broadly covers a variety of trafficking methods, including forced labor, organ trading, and sex trafficking of all ages. Designating a day specifically for Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking is in effort to devote more attention and awareness to the unique and complex factors that contribute to youth vulnerability.
In addition to promoting January 29th as Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Awareness Day, we are promoting the Silver Glitter Awareness Ribbon as the official symbol for child sex trafficking awareness. Currently, the only awareness ribbon that exists is the blue ribbon for human trafficking. The Silver Glitter Awareness Ribbon will specifically be for Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking in effort to devote more attention and awareness to the unique and complex factors that contribute to youth vulnerability.
We have just recently launched a petition asking for January 29th to be designated as National Child Sex Trafficking Awareness Day. Please show your support by signing the petition. This is a grassroots initiative and its success depends on sharing, so after you sign, please share it with your friends and followers asking them to do the same.
Wear the silver glitter awareness ribbon and ask your friends and followers to do the same. You can purchase the Child Sex Trafficking Awareness Ribbon by clicking below.
